The Liga Pro Serie A is the highest division of the Ecuadorian league system and is managed by the Liga Profesional de Fútbol del Ecuador .
The competition was founded in 1957. Until 1950, all football played in the country was amateur. A situation that changed when the Guayas Football Association turned professional and organized the first tournament among its affiliated clubs in Guayaquil. Since then, it has been held annually except for 1958 and 1959, when the AFG and the Non-Amateur Football Association of Pichincha did not reach an agreement for its celebration.
The Liga Pro Serie A is made up of 16 teams that face each other in two short tournaments called Phase 1 and Phase 2. The winners of each one face each other in the final. for the title in a roundtrip elimination format. The winner is crowned champion. At the end of the entire championship, an accumulated classification is drawn up that includes the score of the two phases. This table determines the access to continental competitions and the demotion. The first four qualify for the Copa Libertadores. The fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth placed play the Copa Sudamericana. The two clubs with the fewest points are relegated to the second category .
So far, more than eight teams know what it means to be crowned champions of the tournament. Barcelona, Emelec , El Nacional and Liga de Quito are the most successful in the competition, adding each one more than ten twisted ones. Regarding provinces, the Guayas and Pichincha clubs combine 60 titles between the two.
Emelec was the champion in the inaugural edition . The tournament had the participation of four competitors: the two best from Guayaquil (Bombillo and Barcelona) and from Interandino (Deportivo Quito and Aucas). Each team played two home games and another two away. The victories granted two points for the classification and the tie one.
The Liga Pro Serie A of 2020 was not exempt from suffering the COVID-19 pandemic. The championship was forced to face a three-month break coinciding with the first days of Phase 1. Before resuming it, several friendly matches were organized in order to test the sanitary protocols established to guarantee the safety of the players and coaches. . Barcelona established themselves as champions by defeating Liga de Quito on penalties after the final ended 1-1 on aggregate.
