The Europa Conference League is the third club competition in Europe in order of importance behind the Champions League and the Europa League. The teams that compete in it are determined based on the result of the national leagues and cups of the continent. The winner gets a direct ticket to the group stage of the next edition of the Europa League .
The first rumors that UEFA is considering incorporating in a third competition arose in 2015, considering that it could give the opportunity to the teams of the leagues with the lowest UEFA coefficient of go further than if they play the other two existing tournaments. In December 2018, the news was confirmed when UEFA announced that it will start the 2021-22 season. In 2019, its Europa Conference League name is made public.
The places available for each federation vary depending on the results achieved by their clubs in European competitions in recent years. Being a tournament mainly created for countries with less football potential, the major leagues such as Spain, England or Germany only have one representative. On the other hand, others such as Georgia, Malta or Armenia have three teams.
The format of the Europa Conference League is similar to that of the Champions League and the Europa League. It has 32 teams divided into eight groups of four . The first of each qualifies directly for the round of 16. The second sees the faces with one of the third parties that come from the Europa League. The remaining 16 clubs after the preliminary round meet in round-trip ties until the final. The title is decided in a single match played on a neutral field previously established by UEFA .
The competition is played, at least, until the year 2024, complying with the three-year cycle established for the formats of UEFA tournaments . With some exceptions, the matches are scheduled for Thursdays in two time periods: 18:55 CET and 21:00 CET. This means that they share a day and time with those of the Europa League. For geographical reasons, some matches may start at 16:30 CET. The final is played on Wednesday.
Alexander Ceferin, UEFA President , explained that the Europa Conference League makes UEFA club competitions more inclusive than ever. There will be more games, for more teams, with more federations represented in the group stages.
