The Coppa Italia is a direct elimination tournament that takes place every year between the best teams in the country. The champion gets access to the Supercoppa Italia and the Europa League . In case the winner has already qualified for the Champions League , the place is awarded to the sixth classified in the league.

The competition began to be played in 1922 with 38 participating teams. At first it was considered as a minor tournament, which caused the big clubs to decide to give up playing their matches. Vado were proclaimed champions after beating Udinese 1-0 in the final. To date, it is the only title won by the modest northern Italian team. It was not until 1936 that the next edition was held, almost tripling the number of competitors and resembling the FA Cup format, including tiebreakers (replays).

Currently, the Coppa Italia has 78 participants. The pairings of each round are known from before the start of the tournament. Each tie is played as a single match except for the semifinals, which are played back and forth. In the event of a tie after 120 minutes (90 in regulation time and 30 in extra time), the winner is decided by a penalty shoot-out.

The tournament is made up of eight rounds. It kicks off in August with the presence of only Serie C and Serie D teams. Serie B clubs enter the competition from the second round. Position in the previous Serie A campaign determines when a competition begins. From the ninth to the twentieth place they make their debut in the third round. The best eight, starting in the round of 16.

The 2007 edition was the last Coppa Italia to include a two-legged final. Roma beat Inter with an aggregate score of 7-4. The Giallorossi took a big lead in the first leg thanks to an impressive 6-2 win at the Olympic Stadium with goals from Totti, De Rossi, Perrotta, Mancini and Panucci .

Throughout history, more than 15 clubs have managed to add the trophy to their showcases. Juventus was the first to reach a dozen titles after those won in 1938, 1942, 1959, 1960, 1965, 1979, 1983, 1990, 1995 and 2015. Those from Turin also converted in the first to reach the 20 finals played.
