In case the winner has already qualified for the Champions League , the place is awarded to the sixth classified in the league.

The competition began to be played in 1922 with 38 participating teams. At first it was considered as a minor tournament, which caused the big clubs to decide to give up playing their matches. Each tie is played as a single match except for the semifinals, which are played back and forth.
