The Norway Eliteserien is the main division of the Norwegian league system. It was founded in 1937 and is held annually. Their dispute has only been interrupted in two periods of time: between 1939 and 1940, by World War II, and from 1940 to 1947, due to the process of unifying the different leagues of each district into a single national.

The format of the championship has changed considerably over the years. From having the presence of 75 teams divided into 11 groups in its beginnings to the present format that has been maintained since 2009. The climate of the region forces the event to avoid the harsh winter and be played on atypical dates for the usual in the rest of the European leagues. The competition takes place during the spring, summer and autumn months.

Currently, 16 clubs take part in the Norway Eliteserien and play each other for 30 days. At the end of the season, the classification dictates the future of the teams. The tournament champion qualifies for the qualifying phase of the Champions League. The second and third finishers get a place to compete in the qualifying heats for the Europa Conference League. The two with the fewest points go down in division. The one that occupies the penultimate position disputes a playoff for the permanence against a team of the second category.

Rosenborg is the great dominator in the history of the competition. It is the only club in the country that exceeds ten league titles. A success that they have forged especially between 1992 and 2004, when they were the champions for 12 consecutive editions. Vålerenga broke the streak in 2005, in a year in which the Troillongan finished in seventh place.

Eurosport reached an agreement in 2017 to become the official television channel of the Norway Eliteserien. The chain owns the emission rights until 2023 throughout Europe (with the exception of the Balkans, where Arena Sport currently has them).

Fredrikstad FK was the inaugural champion. The team from the south of the country emerged victorious from District I with 19 points and obtained a place in the playoffs for the championship. The club was crowned the winner by defeating SFK Lyn in the final with a score of 0-4 in the tie-breaker. The first match had ended in a goalless draw after extra time.
